After the first quarter of the 20th century, the possibility of providing Bahía Blanca with a new power plant to meet the needs of the time began to be studied. After many years of investigation and planification, the plant was finally inaugurated in 1932. It is a gigantic reinforced concrete construction built on land reclaimed from the sea. The facade represents an authentic Tudor-style castle, although it has little to do with the European medieval past. This power plant used to provide electricity to the city for 56 years until it was decommissioned in 1988, when the Luis Piedrabuena Thermoelectric Power Plant was already in operation. Today this building is a Provincial and National Historical Monument.

CASA DEL ESPIA|SPY´S HOUSE| 3885 Juan Bautista Justo Ave.

The first floor, which is now used as a café, used to be a living room and dining room.

But… Why is it called la Casa del Espia (Spy´s House)? It is said that the German Gustav Monch, who was the first chief of the General San Martin Power Plant, and a Third Reich informer during the Second World War, had a strategic position. He could observe all port movement and report relevant information about ships and their activities.
