General Daniel Cerri Pathway

General Daniel Cerri Pathway

The town General Daniel Cerri holds within its streets a blend of historical and industrial heritage. It has a unique physiognomy due to its origin tied to the Fortín Cuatreros, and its industrial role through wool manufacturing and meat processing, at the beginning of the 20th century.

The road goes along the Fortín Cuatreros, the workers’ colony, the cinema, the parish, the station, the wool mill, the meat processing plant and the Ecoplant. All these institutions gave origin and fostered the town’s growth.

FORTÍN CUATREROS | Alvarado St. & Plácida Pernicci Ave.

The Fortín Cuatreros was built in 1877 at the request of General Daniel Cerri, the overall commander of Bahía Blanca. The construction was carried out using some materials from the Fortaleza Protectora Argentina (Argentine Protective Fortress) established by Estomba in 1828.

The origin of this construction was a result of repeated violent attacks and cattle thefts by the formerly known as ‘Indians.’ On June 7, 1944, it was declared a National Monument.

In 1974, it was reconstructed by the Army, following the construction methods of the time. Additionally, the now-defunct CAP (Central Argentine Railways) donated a thousand posts for the corral and fence.

The objective of its opening was to host specialized workers and managers from Capital Federal and Gran Buenos Aires who arrived to build the meat processing plant of the Sansinena Company. In the large room at the corner, there was a bar that accessed the dining room and the kitchen where Doña Elvira (Don José Voglino’s wife) cooked for the guests. The cinema reveals the hidden stories of what we miss in our present. Films were projected in slides. Later, silent movies and manually-operated light engine cinema appeared. Finally, sound cinema emerged.
